Taiwan is a diverse society with many different cultures and ethnic groups and food is where we all come together and share in each other’s culture. In this tour, participants will be taken to a cooking studio and learn how to make Taiwanese gourmets and street foods such as braised pork with rice, three-cup chicken, fried dumplings, or prawn/oyster omelet, while having cultural exchange with the chef and friends. If you like cooking—or just eating—this is an experience not to be missed!

Pineapple cakes are a kind of rustic fruit pastry roll that Taiwanese people love to give to overseas friends and business colleagues, which are said to have originated during the Three Kingdoms period 220–280 CE and to convey the hope that the family will prosper and multiply. Participants will learn how to bake this popular desserts from scratches, enjoy the self-made delicious cakes and give to loving families and friends.

Hakka Blue is a traditional Taiwanese dye that, unlike modern chemical dyes, is made from natural plant extracts such as Indigo. The Hakka dye is a saturated and calming shade of blue used by both traditional Hakka blue shirts and aboriginal facial tattoos. Once on the wane, blue dye has seen a resurgence in recent years owing to the renewed interest in environmental protection and natural products. Participants will try their hand at blue dye, using white cloth as a canvas, creating their own patterns and expressing themselves in a uniquely Taiwanese kind of blue.

AFP 5 Taiwanese Tea Art Appreciation

Tea was one of Taiwan’s main crops and export products during the Qing Dynasty, and greatly helped in both Taipei’s and Taiwan’s development. Through the Tea Art Appreciation activity, participants will learn about the history and living culture of the Taiwan tea industry, with demonstrations by a tea art professional, a gold medal winner of the 2017 Xiamen Cultural Industries Fair Oriental Tea Ceremony Competition, explaining how to select, brew, and taste three types of tea: Oriental Beauty, Four Seasons of Spring, and Dong Ding Oolong.
